Google doesn't let us rest for a single week. Last time, we covered the launch of ImageFX & MusicFX, and now we look at Gemini's updates.
This Thursday, the company announced that the Bard chatbot is now called Gemini, Android will soon get a new Gemini app, and the Duet AI model is moving to Google Workspace as the Gemini brand. Google unveiled the public version of Gemini Ultra 1.0, the largest and most feature-rich language model of its design. Let's get into it.
Bard and Duet AI become Gemini
The rebranding of Bard is probably the smallest part of Google's update. The chatbot has changed its name, but otherwise, it works the same way. You can check it out on the official Gemini page. (You will now be automatically redirected to gemini.google.com when you try to go to bard.google.com)
The same goes for all AI tools in Google Workspace platforms like Gmail and Docs, which used to be called "Duet AI." From now on, they are also known as Gemini. These old features have already helped many users write emails, work with spreadsheets, and perform other tasks.
Gemini App
A new mobile service for Android will be one of the main tools where users will interact with the updated chatbot. When you download the app to your device, Google will prompt you to use Gemini as your default assistant. If you accept, the chatbot will replace Google Assistant.
Google is gradually shifting its focus from Assistant to Gemini. And it looks like it won't be long before Gemini completely replaces the old app. As for iOS, there is no Gemini app for Apple's platform yet. Since iPhone owners can't replace Siri with another AI assistant by default, Google will integrate the new chatbot into its old app.
Gemini Ultra 1.0
And here it is. This is the most significant update of today's newsletter. Google has launched Gemini Ultra 1.0. To avoid getting lost in the company's naming, think of this product as the ChatGPT Plus alternative. Like OpenAI's paid chatbot, Ultra 1.0 is the largest AI model the company has been able to build.
Google doesn't provide exact numbers to determine Gemini's capabilities. However, the developers promise a higher level of coding, logical reasoning, and working on creative projects. In particular, Google has improved contextual understanding. This means that Gemini Ultra can better handle long dialogs and complex wording.
As Google says, according to third-party evaluators, Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0 is the best chatbot compared to the leading alternatives (Yes, OpenAI and Microsoft, they're talking about you).
Gemini is already available in more than 40 languages and in more than 230 countries. But Advanced is rolling out gradually, so users from some regions will have to wait.

News Of The Week 🌍
Sam Altman seeks investment of up to $7 trillion for AI chip production
It's a new week, which means new details on how Sam Altman plans AI chip production. The WSJ reports that the OpenAI chief is seeking investors, including the UAE, for a project requiring up to $7 trillion in investment. This capital will be the basis for launching a large-scale production of semiconductors designed specifically for AI products.
Interestingly, such a sum of investment would dwarf the current size of the global semiconductor industry. Global sales of chips were $527 billion in 2023 and are expected to rise to $1 trillion by 2030.
The U.S. will have a safety consortium made up of major AI companies
Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Anthropic, Microsoft Corp., Meta Platforms Inc., OpenAI, and many others join Government efforts to set safety standards for AI. The top industry players will work with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, other technology companies, civil society groups, academics, and state and local government officials to establish safety standards for advanced models.
Hugging Face launches open-source platform to create custom AI models
Hugging Face, a New York-based startup developing an open-source AI model-sharing platform has launched Chat Assistant. This product will allow users to create their chatbots. You know what we're talking about if you've worked with OpenAI's GPT Builder.
The main difference between Hugging Chat Assistant and GPT Builder is that it is an entirely free platform.
Meta Calls for Industry Efforts to Label A.I.-Generated Content
Mark Zuckerberg's company is pushing standardized tags to help users discover AI-generated content. Meta says this approach will help developers protect their creations, including photos, videos, and audio content, and slow the spread of fakes online. Previously, a similar initiative was supported by Adobe.
9to5Mac: Apple plans to buy AI startup to boost Vision Pro privacy
According to insiders, Apple is preparing to acquire German startup Brighter AI, which specializes in anonymizing facial and license plate data. Brighter AI can alter images so that objects can no longer be identified. You may have seen similar systems in 3D View on Google Maps. 9to5Mac's sources say Apple needs Brighter's technology to improve Vision Pro.
Ambience Healthcare raises $70M for AI to support medical clinics
AI is gaining a more significant role in supporting the healthcare industry. Startup Ambience Healthcare, which raised $70 million this week, is developing a model that streamlines and automates administrative work for healthcare organizations. The product streamlines the work of doctors, eliminates the paperwork routine, and allows them to focus on what really matters - the patients.
FCC declares AI-voiced robocalls illegal
Usually, we rejoice when AI enters new fields and becomes everywhere. But there are also cases where, well, we don't like it. The FCC has announced that AI-generated robocalls are now outlawed, just as recorded robocalls were previously banned. TechCrunch speculates that this clarification stems from the high-profile story of a fake President Biden calling New Hampshire citizens and asking them “not to waste their votes in the primary election.”
