Google shared two new AI tools at once this week and a significant update to its Bard chatbot. But let's start with the main thing: the launch of ImageFX & MusicFX.
ImageFX
ImageFX is a new tool in Labs that allows you to generate images from textual cues. Google calls ImageFX's main feature "expressive chips" that allow you to experiment quickly with related aspects of creativity and ideas.
The Imagen 2 model is powering the new image generation features of ImageFX. The technology also drives new generative AI capabilities in Bard, Search, Ads, Duet AI in Workspace, and Vertex AI. Google says Imagen 2 helps generate the highest quality images created with artificial intelligence. The model also helps protect images from artifacts and improves areas of image generation that such tools have so far been unable to handle.
MusicFX
The company also unveiled MusicFX. This is a major upgrade of MusicLM, a music creation tool released by Google last year. Like its predecessor, MusicFX can create ditties of up to 70 seconds and music loops. But this time, Google promises more speed and quality in content creation.
MusicFX lets users enter a text prompt to describe the music they want to create. The AI generates two 30-second tracks, with the option to lengthen the tracks (to 50 or 70 seconds) or automatically combine them together at the beginning and end to loop them.
Important note: All images and audio created with ImageFX and MusicFX are labeled SynthID. This digital watermark shows that the content is created with AI. The ImageFXs created will also include IPTC metadata. According to Google, this will give users more information whenever they encounter AI-created images.
US, Kenya, New Zealand, and Australian residents can already try these new and updated tools on AI Test Kitchen. For now, they are only available in English, but Google will add support for other languages in the future.
The second major update from Google is dedicated to the Bard chatbot. It now runs on the Gemini Pro model and supports over 40 languages (the complete list can be found here).
Bard’s Update
Last December, the company added Gemini Pro to Bard in English, giving Bard a deeper understanding, reasoning, summarizing, and coding abilities. Today, Gemini Pro in Bard will be available in more than 230 countries and territories so that more people can collaborate with it.
Google also said it understands users' desire to double-check Bard's answers. That's why the company has expanded the double verification feature. When you click on the "G" icon, Bard will evaluate the availability of web content to validate your answer. This way, the user can select a highlighted phrase to view additional information to confirm or refute the search result.
News Of The Week 🌍
Sam Altman had a trip to South Korea to visit Samsung and SK Hynix
As we mentioned in our last digest, Sam Altman is increasingly looking to enter the AI chip manufacturing market. Now, this story is getting new details: this week, the OpenAI founder visited South Korea to get a tour of local semiconductor manufacturers' factories.
Sam visited the Samsung and SK Hynix facilities. We don't know what was discussed at the talks, but it seems that OpenAI is getting closer to a major deal!
Tim Cook teases an important AI product from Apple
During the quarterly financial results report, Tim Cook mentioned that Apple is working on a generative AI product. He said Apple's AI will be released as early as this year. But, as per the old tradition, the company won't reveal details until the release.
We can only assume that the mysterious AI will appear at WWDC 2024, which takes place in early summer. Or it will be unveiled at an event dedicated to the new generation of iPhones this fall.
Amazon debuts an AI shopping assistant. It's called Rufus.
Amazon now has an AI product that ensures your shopping experience never ends. Sounds creepy, but it's what we got. The company has announced an AI-powered shopping assistant trained on the e-commerce product catalog and information from around the web.
The new tool has already launched in beta for some of Amazon's US customers. Users can interact with Rufus in the mobile app, search through products via dialog, compare them with each other, and get recommendations for purchases.
Instacart is now using AI to generate food pictures. For some reason, it's not working
The moment when AI created strange images with unrealistic details has already passed. But something went wrong at Instacart. As first spotted in the Instacart subreddit, the grocery-delivery app uses generative AI for the food photos it runs with the AI-generated recipes it creates. And the results are not appetizing.
In many photos, the principles of composition are broken, dull colors are used, and fruits and vegetables are not fully drawn. Let's hope that Instacart will solve this problem, but in the meantime, you can look at the company's results.
Shopify expands its suite of generative AI tools with a new image generator
Shopify has unveiled over 100 updates to its platform, with AI emerging as a key theme. Media editor that brings generative image fill to its platform and conversational search powered by AI. Shopify’s merchants can now prompt the image editor to modify photo backgrounds without Photoshop experience and other apps. AI editor can also suggest styles that match existing product images in the user’s library once it rolls out this spring.
OpenAI study reveals the role of AI in future biological threat creation
The developers of ChatGPT conducted a study to evaluate the feasibility of using AI to assist in biological threat generation. Fortunately for all AI enthusiasts, GPT-4 provides only a "slight increase" in accuracy when creating biological threats compared to existing resources on the Internet.
But that doesn't mean OpenAI will ignore the potential threat. Researchers emphasized the need for continued discussion on this topic and the development of improved assessment methods and ethical guidelines for safety risks associated with the use of AI.
