Mistral AI, an open-source AI startup, reached $ 2 B in valuation in less than 6 months!

Mistral, an open-source AI startup that posted their model as a torrent link last week on X, has just raised over $650Mn and is now valued at $2Bn, all within 6 months of its inception! Founded on June 13th, 2023, the company already has two models and just about 20 total employees.

Mistral AI has officially closed its much anticipated Series A funding round. The French company has raised €385 million ($415 million)

However, this is not the first time this AI startup has made waves in the news, they successfully raised over $113Mn on the very day of their founding, setting a record for the largest seed round in the EU!

And they have managed to do all this while being open source (which OpenAI was supposed to be) and launching their models to the general public through torrents by posting (tweeting) them on X.

Now, let’s delve into the minds behind this miraculous startup.

The company was founded by three former Google and Meta employees who worked on leading projects like Deepmind and LLama. Their only aim when they started was to beat ChatGPT3.5 by the end of the year, and true to their word, they did that!

Let’s take a look at these models made by them:

Mistral 7b

A 7B dense transformer, fast-deployed and easily customizable. Small yet powerful for a variety of use cases. Supports English and code and an 8k context window.

Mixtral 8x7B MoE

A 7B sparse Mixture-of-Experts model with stronger capabilities than Mistral 7B. Uses 12B active parameters out of 45B total. It supports multiple languages, code, and a 32k context window.

Stability AI is introducing a membership model
A 20$/month membership benefits companies or individuals, supporting their goal of advancing open AI while ensuring accessibility, innovation, and responsible use. The plan makes state-of-the-art AI available based on users' needs and budgets as AI grows in power.

Meta is unveiling Purple Llama, an open-source initiative encompassing cybersecurity benchmarks like CyberSec Eval for assessing language models' risks and Llama Guard, a pre-trained content safety classifier, aiming to facilitate responsible development of generative AI models and encourage adherence to safety standards in deployments.
Atlassian introduces AI capabilities, branded as Atlassian Intelligence, across products like Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket, enabling users to enhance individual and team productivity through features like AI-generated summaries, natural language to JQL, virtual agents, and forthcoming AI definitions for projects and terms.
Google has launched Gemini Pro API, the second-best model in the Gemini family, providing developers and enterprises free access with features like a 32K context window, multimodal capabilities, and various SDKs, while the pricing post-general availability is comparable to GPT-3.5-turbo, and additional enhancements are introduced for enterprise users through Google Cloud.
Stability AI is working with Intel to build a new supercomputer, citing accessibility, affordability, and scalability.
AI to predict the future? Runaway Research unveils a general world model, an AI system that builds an internal representation of an environment and uses it to simulate future events within that environment.
Axel Springer, a big AI company, is teaming up with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. The companies will integrate recent news content into ChatGPT to provide users with authoritative, up-to-date information.
Glean, the startup founded by the Ex-Google search team is nearing a $2B valuation.
OpenAI Startup Fund (which, to be clear, doesn’t count OpenAI as an investor; it’s very confusingly a separate entity) today announced the launch of Converge-2, the second cohort of its six-week Converge program for “exceptional engineers, designers, researchers, and product builders using AI to reimagine the world,”
