xAI Will Open Source Grok This Week. Here's What You Need to Know
A few days ago, Elon Musk announced on X that his stealthy startup xAI would soon open source Grok - the billionaire's answer to ChatGPT, Gemini, and other famous chatbots. So far, Musk hasn't kept his promise (he has two more days to do so), but that won't stop us from figuring out the main features of Grok and xAI.
In terms of user interaction, Grok works like other chatbots. The AI answers questions, helps get work done, and simply communicates in natural language. However, as Musk explained, unlike its competitors, Grok has "a bit of wit and "a rebellious streak." This means two things at once: the chatbot is not shy about discussing hot topics, and he's a bit rude.
Another important aspect of Grok is its access to real-time data from X. A user can ask Grok about news and events, after which the chatbot will gather and share the most popular headlines. Other models, except Bing AI, cannot do this for now.
Grok is based on a generative AI model called Grok-1. It was developed on a cluster of "tens of thousands" GPUs. To train it, xAI got data from the Internet and feedback from human helpers, which xAI calls "AI tutors." The developers say Grok-1 is about as efficient as Meta's Llama 2 model and beats OpenAI's GPT-3.5.
Grok is ready to talk to you about politics in the US or cultural trends. That's a pretty significant difference. While ChatGPT and Gemini will cite their limitations and note that all points of view are essential, Grok will generate a response. Given Musk's sentiments, we can assume that xAI's chatbot will be more conservative than its competitors.
For me, the public release of Grok seems like intriguing news. Musk is clearly being aggressive towards other AIs and is very ambitious in describing his plans. While Google and OpenAI look like competing friends, xAI could bring discord pushing us forward.
But it's worth recognizing that Grok lacks features that other AIs have. For example, Gemini has an index of the entire Internet, and ChatGPT-4 can use Dalle, run code using a data analysis, and browse the Internet. That's something Musk's rude bot is not yet capable of.

About xAI
As for the company, we don't know much about xAI. The startup was launched in March last year, and its goal is, in Musk's words, "to understand the true nature of the universe". Grok is the startup's only product for now.
In December, CoinDesk reported that xAI seeks to raise up to $1 billion in equity investment. This data is based on papers filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. At the same time, insiders said xAI had raised $134.7 million.
Musk promised that the startup would release Grok-1.5 later this year. This model could enable summarizing threads and replies and suggesting post content.
Grok isn't publicly available yet, but there are plenty of options already:
News Of The Week 🌍
Apple Acquires AI Startup as It Races to Add Features
Apple has added a new AI startup to its portfolio. According to Bloomberg, the company has acquired DarwinAI, which specializes in vision-based tech to observe components during manufacturing to improve efficiency. Both companies have remained silent, but the LinkedIn profiles of several startup team members have already changed. The developers are now part of Apple's ML team.
Besides helping with manufacturing efficiency, DarwinAI uses techniques to make AI models smaller and faster. Bloomberg reports that this could be useful for the on-device genAI features Apple hopes to introduce in iOS 18 this year.
Microsoft Launches Copilot Pro Worldwide With One-month Free Trial
Microsoft expanded its $20 monthly subscription to Copilot Pro to more markets after launching the AI-powered assistant in January. Starting this month, Copilot Pro will be available in 222 countries, and Microsoft will launch a one-month free trial to encourage consumers.
Copilot Pro has access to the latest OpenAI models, the ability to create your own Copilot GPT, and access to Copilot inside Office apps if you're already a Microsoft 365 Personal or Home subscriber. Microsoft also unlocks Copilot Pro inside Office web apps, so you don't need a separate Microsoft 365 subscription to use the chatbot in Word, Outlook, and other web apps.

World's First Major Act to Regulate AI Passed by European Lawmakers
The European Union's parliament approved the world's first major set of regulatory ground rules to govern the mediatized artificial intelligence. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola called the law groundbreaking, saying it will foster innovation while protecting fundamental rights.
The law bans biometric identification systems that use facial images from the Internet and CCTV footage to create databases. It also bans facial recognition systems, emotion recognition in workplaces and schools, "social rating", and systems that "manipulate human behavior" or exploit human vulnerabilities.
DeepMind trains a model that will become your companion in games
AI models that play games were created decades ago, but they usually specialize in a single game and always play to win. Google DeepMind researchers have a different goal in their latest creation: a model that has learned to play multiple 3D games like a human and does its best to understand and act on your verbal instructions.
SIMA by DeepMind doesn't have access to the game's internal code or rules; instead, humans have trained it on many hours of video demonstrating gameplay. The model learns to associate certain visual representations of actions, objects, and interactions from this data and the annotations provided by the data taggers. DeepMind didn’t disclose whether the model would appear in the public domain.
OpenAI partners with Le Monde and Prisa Media for news content
OpenAI has announced a partnership with French newspaper Le Monde and Spain’s Prisa Media to develop news features for ChatGPT. Content from partners' publications will be used to train ChatGPT models. In a blog post, OpenAI said users will receive news summaries and links to original articles from partnered publishers.
This is the company's second agreement with media in the last two years. In 2023, OpenAI partnered with The Associated Press and Axel Springer, giving OpenAI the right to use repositories and content from news articles to train its AI systems.
