Access and Availability:
The "Tasks" feature is in beta and available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers. If you are one of them, select "GPT-4.0 with Scheduled Tasks" in the model picker. There's a limit of 10 active tasks per user at any given time.
Keep your mailbox updated with key knowledge & news from the AI industry
OpenAI employees have made no secret that Tasks is one of the company's first forays into agent AI. It will be a key focus in 2025. Hereβs what president & co-founder of OpenAI Greg Brockman wrote about the release:
As for the future, the company's next agent will likely be the mysterious βOperator.β According to a Bloomberg report, OpenAI will soon unveil an autonomous AI that can control our computers and perform tasks independently of the user. Previously, insiders said the release would be in January 2025.
Tasks is the week's main news, and we can talk about its features for a long time. That's why we've dedicated a separate post to it. Check it out if you want to understand how to get the most out of the latest OpenAI release:

Zuckerberg: AI Could Soon Do the Work of Midlevel Coders
Late last week, the head of Meta appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast and discussed a wide range of topics. Mark made many interesting statements about politics, censorship, and technology. We won't parse them all (you're better off watching the podcast), but will highlight the most significant for our industry.
I mean this statement:
He said that by 2025, Meta and other tech companies will have AI that can function as mid-level engineers, writing and debugging code efficiently. So in the long run, Meta expects to automate all coding for its applications. According to Mark, AI systems could reduce code-writing time by 35-45% and documentation time by up to 50%.
Around the same time, the company said that Meta would be cutting 5 percent of its workforceβtargeting "lowest performers."
Luma Labs Unveils Ray2 Model
Luma AI has introduced the Ray 2 Video Model. This platform, accessible through Dream Machine, is intended for consumers, prosumers, and professionals. Ray 2 produces up to 10-second video clips featuring advanced cinematography and smooth motion. It comprehends interactions between people, animals, and objects, enabling the creation of consistent and physically accurate characters.
Microsoft Updates Its Copilot Approach for 365
Microsoft has announced the integration of its Copilot AI assistant into Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions, expanding its availability beyond business users. This integration allows users to utilize AI features across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Following this update, subscription prices will increase by $3 per month, with the Personal plan now at $9.99 and the Family plan at $12.99.
The company has also introduced Copilot Chat, a free AI-driven chat service for businesses. It enables the creation of AI agents to assist with tasks like market research and meeting preparations. Advanced features require a $30 monthly Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription.

Google Refreshes Its Approach to AI in Workspace
Google has also refreshed its strategy for a Gemini. The company announced that all AI features in its Workspace suite, including apps like Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Meet, are now available at no additional cost. Previously, these features were part of Gemini's business plan, which required an additional $20/mo per user. At the same time, Google is increasing the price of standard Workspace plans by about $2/mo per user, raising the base subscription from $12 to $14 monthly.
It's pretty interesting that similar updates for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace were made in the same week. That said, the goals are clear: both companies are rethinking their approaches to AI in 2025 to make its use more commonplace.
Synthesia Secures $180M At $2,1B Valuation
London-based AI video platform Synthesia has raised $180M in a Series D. This investment brings startupβs total capital to over $330M and values the company at $2.1 billion, making it the UK's most valuable generative AI media firm. Synthesia's platform enables businesses to create AI video content featuring lifelike human avatars, serving over 60,000 customers, including more than 60% of Fortune 100 companies.
The funds will support product development, talent growth, and expansion into markets such as Japan, Australia, Europe, and North America.
Mistral AI Enhances Le Chat with AFP Partnership
Mistral AI and Agence France-Presse (AFP) have partnered to integrate AFP's news content into Le Chat. This collaboration grants Mistral's AI access to AFP's daily production of 2,300 stories in six languages, enhancing the chatbot's ability to provide accurate and up-to-date responses. The partners stated that the deal ensures that Le Chat's outputs are grounded in reliable information, addressing concerns over the spread of misinformation.
Incidentally, Google also did a similar deal this week. The company agreed to work with the Associated Press to help make Gemini more relevant for users.
