Nightshade: Artists Tool to Sabotage Generative AI Training Data
A new tool called Nightshade empowers artists to subtly alter their artwork before uploading it online, potentially disrupting AI training data. Nightshade, developed by a team led by Ben Zhao at the University of Chicago, aims to counter AI companies using artists' work without permission. This "poisoning" technique can damage image-generating AI models, making outputs unpredictable.
The tool is part of an effort to shift power from AI companies to artists, and it may lead to more respect for artists' copyrights and intellectual property. The tool Glaze, which masks artists' styles, works similarly and can be integrated with Nightshade.
Nightshade can cause misinterpretations and odd outputs in the model's dataset. While misuse is possible, attacking larger models requires many poisoned samples, highlighting the need for better defenses. Nightshade empowers artists to safeguard their work from AI companies, potentially shifting the balance in favor of creators.
