OpenAI’s Game of Thrones, ChatGPT Gets Voice Mode, and Meta Releases Llama 3.2
PLUS HOT AI Tools & Tutorials
Hello and welcome to our weekly roundup!
What do you think of Meta Connect 2024? I'm not alluding to the other big tech company (which held its event on September 9), but I think it was one of the best conferences in recent months. After all, we got real hardware and software products (including the new LLM) and a first look at an interesting concept.
Okay, moving on to the news. Today, we have some drama, a bunch of new products, as well as new tools, guides, and bonus materials. Let's get started.

More Empty Chairs in the OpenAI Office
Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, is leaving the company. She wrote in a company memo that she is “leaving because she wants to free up time and space for her own research.” She said she would focus on ensuring a “smooth transition.” Murati's departure after six and a half years coincided with the disappearance of two other essential employees: Bob McGrew, chief scientist, and Barret Zoph, vice president of research, will no longer work at OpenAI.
These three add to the already long list of specialists the company has lost over the past few months. We wrote about others, including John Schulman, Greg Brockman, and Peter Deng, in this post:

Elon Musk: “Sam Altman is Little Finger”
Elon Musk knows how to provoke people; I think no one doubts it. And, of course, he's not mine to pass along the news of Murati's departure. Musk reposted a funny @levelsio meme (which we wrote about in this post, by the way) in which Altman's OpenAI colleagues disappear one by one and compare the founder to the infamous “Game of Thrones” character Petyr Baelish, also known as Little Finger.
Musk went on to make several more reposts of comments criticizing Altman, including a post in which Altman said he didn't need more money. According to some users, OpenAI is becoming increasingly a for-profit company. While there's nothing wrong with the fact itself, coupled with the disappearance of key individuals from the company, it seems that Altman wants to be the sole beneficiary of OpenAI's accomplishments.
Сhanges within OpenAI does seem troubling. However, I wouldn't say I like how Musk links what is happening to Sam Altman's greed. Despite the obvious problems, OpenAI still continues to build quality and affordable products without losing its position as a leader. So, let's not blame anyone and focus on business.
After all, OpenAI is doing really well so far.
News Of The Week 🌍
OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT
OpenAI recently announced the launch of its advanced voice mode (AVM) for ChatGPT in the US. The new feature is already available for users with a paid monthly subscription starting at $20. The AI can now communicate with you using different voices and accents, answering questions more naturally. The company also noted that users who talk to GPT too much may experience speed limitations.
Currently, voice mode does not work in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK.
The AVM feature was announced in May this year and then became the reason for a rather interesting conflict between OpenAI and actress Scarlett Johansson. The thing is that the voice used at the presentation very much resembled the way the actress spoke in the movie “Her.” After a while, OpenAI stopped using that voice.OpenAI Rolls Out Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT
Meta Held Its Connect 2024 Annual Conference
The other day, the company held its annual Meta Connect 2024 event. During the event, Meta presented much news about current and future devices and AI plans. Among the gadgets we saw were the Quest 3S VR and a first look at the new Orion augmented reality glasses. Mark Zuckerberg showed how users could soon translate from English to Spanish (and eventually other languages) in real-time using this device.
I found this conference to be one of the most intense in recent memory, so I recommend watching Mark Zuckerberg's talk in its entirety.

Meta Releases LLama 3.2 That Can Generate Images
But the major release for us at Meta Connect 2024 was the news of the launch of Llama 3.2. Just two months after the release of its biggest model, the company introduced a more advanced version. Llama 3.2 is once again an open-source model, but with one very nice addition: it now generates not only text but also images. This solution now includes two vision models, with 11B and 90B parameters, and two lightweight text-oriented models, with 1B and 3B parameters.
What's interesting is that the lighter models are pre-prepared to run on Qualcomm, MediaTek, and other Arm hardware. Apparently, Meta is counting on the success of the new LLMs on mobile devices.
Hugging Face Surpassed 1M AI Models Listings
The platform, which started as a chatbot app in 2016 and then grew into an open-source hub for AI models in 2020, has reached a major milestone. As Ars Technica reports, Hugging Face now hosts more than a million AI models. And according to the platform itself, growth is not slowing down, but rather the number of user-hosted solutions is increasing exponentially.
The most popular model on Hugging Face, with a lead of 163 million downloads, is MIT's Audio Spectrogram Transformer, which categorizes audio content such as speech, music and environmental sounds. Behind it, with 54.2 million downloads, is Google's BERT, an AI language model that learns to understand English by predicting disguised words and sentence connections, allowing it to help with various language tasks.
