OpenAI Search Engine, Apple & Google Devices, and TikTok AI-Labeled Content
PLUS HOT AI Tools & Tutorials
Hello and welcome to our weekly digest!
I'm unsure where to start this week's roundup, so let's start with an interesting fact: did you know you should be nice with chatbots? No, not because of the potential robopocalypse (although that too), but because polite prompts help LLMs make better answers.
Researchers reached that conclusion a couple of months ago. The difference in responses isn’t significant, but why not if it helps us avoid a “Terminator" scenario?
Okay, we have a whole bunch of interesting news today, so without further, let's discuss the week!
Oh, and don't miss our new selection of tools that founders can't live without:

OpenAI Plans to Announce Google Search Competitor
Sam Altman's startup is preparing to strike a blow at Google right before the annual I/O conference. According to Reuters (as well as Bloomberg and The Information), OpenAI will announce a new AI-based product early next week. It will be an engine that will use GPT to search relevant data on the web. You may have seen something similar with Perplexity, but OpenAI's model will presumably be more advanced.
There are plenty of leaks, but no confirmations yet. Bloomberg says the OpenAI search feature will be built into its ChatGPT chatbot and include citations. At the same time, The Information's sources said that the OpenAI search service will be partially powered by Bing. Moreover, a few days ago, The Verge reported that the startup is aggressively poaching Google employees to build its own search offering.
The rumors have become so numerous that now even Google worries about its future. A few weeks ago, Google Search boss Prabhakar Raghavan told employees that the company was preparing for a "different market reality" and urged them to work faster. He cited new patterns in consumer behavior, increased competition, and regulatory challenges as the main reasons for the changes.
CBNC reporters obtained an audio recording of Raghavan's meeting with employees. On it, the head of Google Search tried to morale in the team:
If there’s a clear and present market reality, we need to twitch faster, like the athletes twitch faster. People come to us because we are trusted. They may have a new gizmo out there that people like to play with but they still come to Google to verify what they see there because it is the trusted source and it becomes more critical in this era of generative AI.
So yeah, even Google's top management started fidgeting in their chairs, and that's saying a lot.
Revolution in The World of Search Engines?
We don't have enough information to conclude whether OpenAI will be able to turn the game around with its new product. But let's try to speculate on the topic.
I love it when new players in an established market want to bring something new. And it would seem that OpenAI has everything they need: a loyal user base, cool technology, and data (lots of data). But is that enough to knock Google off its pedestal?
Keep your mailbox updated with key knowledge & news from the AI industry
The hype building around the unnamed OpenAI product reminds me of Microsoft's Bing AI announcement. Everyone was discussing the launch, saying they would finally find a reason to abandon Google and that searching for information would be much more convenient. But how many people switched to Bing AI?
I tried and eventually went back to Google.
On the other hand, Perplexity, with its search summarization and source citation feature, did find a place among my Chrome extensions. It's still not a full-fledged alternative, but it's not a bad slap in the face to Google for being slow.
Maybe OpenAI has its own trump card up its sleeve. We'll find out very soon! The estimated date of announcement is May 13.
I do not doubt we will have much to discuss next week.

Apple and Google Announce AI-Enabled Devices
Apple and Google held their spring presentations this week. We are not particularly interested in the devices themselves (you probably already know everything about them), so we will pay attention to the AI component in these gadgets.
Google has unveiled the Pixel 8a smartphone. The main feature of the new device is a pre-installed Gemini Nano. Users can activate the chatbot by holding the power button. This AI supports search functions on the highlighted object in the photo and sound emoji. The Pixel 8a also has AI features like Magic Editor and Circle to Search.
At the same time, Apple revealed the new iPad Pro with the M4 chip. The latter is a neural engine that promises powerful AI capabilities. iPad features include visual lookup, subject lift, and live text capture. Apple plans to add more AI-based apps in future updates.
Planning to try any of these gadgets? I'm personally thinking of buying a Pixel 8a. Hmmm, or should I wait for the fall presentation…
TikTok Will Automatically Label AI-Generated Content
TikTok has launched its anti-fake campaign. The company announced that it will start automatically labeling AI-generated content. With this change, if a creator posts content that was created with a service like DALL-E, it will have an "AI-generated" label attached to it to notify viewers that it was created with LLM.
As the company explained, TikTok is doing so by implementing Content Credentials, a technology from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), which Microsoft and Adobe co-founded. Content Credentials attach specific metadata to content, which TikTok can then use to recognize and label content instantly.
This is another round in the acceptance phase of generated content. Will the new rules affect creators? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
TechCrunch: Mistral AI Raising at $6B Valuation
According to TechCrunch, Paris-based startup Mistral AI, which develops open-source LLMs, is gearing up for a new round of funding. Anonymous informants say the company's valuation is now $6 billion, triple the valuation it received in December. The new investment will help Mistral compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.
Potential investors: DST Global, General Catalyst, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Mistral continues to delight us with new achievements. So this is a reminder of our newsletter, where we broke the story of founder Arthur Mensch and how his startup reached a $2.1 billion valuation in just 9 months:

Amazon Launches Platform to Let Organizations Experiment with AI
The company has introduced a new tool called Bedrock Studio. It allows enterprises to experiment with generative AI, collaborate on these models, and ultimately build their own applications. Bedrock Studio helps developers evaluate, analyze, customize, and share models from Anthropic, Cohere, Mistral, Meta, and other Bedrock partners. With this, companies can test different model customizations and constraints and integrate external data sources and APIs.
The NY Times Columnist Spent a Month with 18 AI Companions
Journalist Kevin Roose set up an amusing experiment on himself. He created a social circle consisting of virtual friends and became fully immersed in the world of AI communication. Specifically, Roose's social circle included an AI therapist, an AI mentor, an AI lawyer, an AI coach, and other generated people with the prefix "AI."
The results were… controversial. The columnist was sure he would quickly conclude that constant interaction with AI wastes time. But it didn't turn out to be that simple. Chatbots were able to support the journalist and coped very well with imitating real acquaintances. In particular, they chatted among themselves, criticized his clothes, and gave some good advice.
