Grok's Open Source
Last week, we revealed what Grok AI and its developers, startup xAI, are all about. To avoid repeating ourselves, we recommend reading that post. Now, let's talk about what came to light with Elon Musk's release of the Grok-1 model.
So, xAI released Grok-1's base model weights and network architecture. It is a 314 billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model trained from scratch by xAI. According to developers, the model is not fine-tuned for any specific application, such as dialogue. The company released it under the Apache 2.0 license.
You can already try out the new model by following the instructions on GitHub.
Some enthusiasts are already actively testing the new model. For example, Matthew Berman has run Grok-1 through all the base tests. And it was pretty good. In this video, the YouTuber tests Grock's logic and reasoning skills and real-time information pulling, coding, and answering simple math problems. Here are some key results:
Can write Python code for games like Snake. But sometimes generates code with errors that require troubleshooting.
Solves simple math problems, including basic arithmetic and basic algebra
Demonstrates the ability to pull current Twitter information and answer questions on potentially sensitive topics.
Well on a logic problem that most other large language models fail on.
Struggles with tasks that involve more complex interpretations of language. (e.g., the impact of multiple people working on a task).
It's a good start. Soon we'll find out whether Grok-1 is capable of competing with Meta, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft for the title of best model.

Neuralink Achievement
Speaking of Musk, we can't ignore the achievement of his other startup, Neuralink. A few days ago, the company revealed that it had implanted a chip into a human brain for the first time. In a live broadcast posted on X, 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh showed how to move a computer cursor using his mind to play online chess.
Due to a diving accident, Arbaugh has been paralyzed below the shoulders for the past few years. In January, he underwent surgery to implant a Neuralink chip to give the patient the ability to control a PC. This device can read the activity of neurons in the brain and transmit a wireless signal to a receiving device, which then connects to the user's device and allows them to control the computer.
Although this Neuralink has a very indirect relation to AI, paying attention to such technological advances is necessary. Given Musk's interest in AI and neural interfaces, it's possible that it won't be long before we see these technologies come together to bring us more interesting and important use cases.
News Of The Week 🌍
Apple Is in Talks to Let Google Gemini Power iPhone AI Features
One of the most intriguing topics of the week (and just as mysterious) is the possible collaboration between Apple and Google. According to Bloomberg, the companies are in active negotiations to let Apple license Gemini, Google's set of generative AI models, to power some new features coming to the iPhone software this year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private.
Unfortunately, that's pretty much all the information at this point. Bloomberg sources also mentioned that Apple was in similar talks with OpenAI, but the outcome is unknown. Although a small leak was enough for speculation on the topic. Some users are already jokingly calling the next iPhone “GeminiPhone“.
By the way, if you want to understand how the Gemini Ultra works, we have a newsletter for you:
Sam Altman: We Could Have AGI In 5 Years
The founder and CEO of OpenAI appeared on Lex Friedman's podcast (you'll find a link to the full episode in the bonus materials), where he shared his thoughts on the topic of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). According to Altman, AI will reach a new level of development within five years in this decade. He also added that AGI will be so powerful that no single person on the planet should have complete control over the technology. Not even Altman himself or OpenAI.
GitHub’s latest AI Tool Can Automatically Fix Code Vulnerabilities
GitHub is launching the first beta version of its code scan auto-fix feature to find and fix security vulnerabilities during the coding process. This feature combines the real-time capabilities of GitHub's Copilot with CodeQL, a semantic code analysis engine.
GitHub promises that this system will be able to fix more than two-thirds of the vulnerabilities - often without requiring developers to edit any code themselves.

GTC 2024 Keynote With Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang
This week, Nvidia had its annual GTC conference, where AI was discussed extensively. Here are the highlights by the company's CEO Jensen Huang:
The company launches a 30x faster and 25x more efficient AI chip than its predecessor.
The foundation is being prepared for the emergence of humanoid robots with AI.
Factories will build/test/inventory products digitally first.
Nvidia launches NIM to make it smoother to deploy AI models into production.
Nvidia CEO Sees Artificial General Intelligence Within 5 Years.
Healthcare will be 100% personalized to the genome, all delivered digitally.
Neural network-centric supercomputers will soon increase worldwide.
Apple Quietly Developed a Family of LLMs
While the partnership with Google isn't approved, Apple isn't standing still. The company’s researchers say they’ve developed a family of multimodal models — which refers to an AI system that can interpret and generate different types of data, such as text and image, at the same time — called MM1. The new report said its new methods boasts “superior abilities” and can offer advanced reasoning and in-context learning to respond to text and images.
