Apple AI research can transform IPhones and catch up with Big Tech rivals
Apple has recently unveiled groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence research, reaffirming its position as a leader in technological innovation. In two new papers, the Cupertino-based company introduces cutting-edge techniques for 3D avatars and efficient language model inference, potentially revolutionizing visual experiences and enabling sophisticated AI systems on consumer devices like the iPhone and iPad.
The first paper introduces HUGS (Human Gaussian Splats), a method for generating animated 3D avatars from short monocular videos. HUGS stands out for its remarkable speed, being up to 100 times faster in training and rendering compared to previous methods. It can disentangle static scenes and animatable human avatars from monocular videos within just 30 minutes, showcasing photorealistic results optimized on a typical gaming GPU.
In the second paper, Apple addresses a key challenge in deploying large language models (LLMs) on devices with limited memory. With models like GPT-4 containing hundreds of billions of parameters, the proposed system minimizes data transfer from flash storage into scarce DRAM during inference. Techniques like "Windowing" and "row-column bundling" significantly improve inference latency, achieving a 4-5x speedup on an Apple M1 Max CPU and up to 20-25x on a GPU. These optimizations are crucial for deploying advanced LLMs in resource-limited environments, potentially paving the way for smooth operation of complex AI assistants and chatbots on Apple mobile devices.
Apple is probably the least hyped tech company in AI but research papers shows that company is telling to the rest of world that they are entering AI.
Going to see AI in Apple Vision? Hopefully, generative networks with augmented reality are something mindblowing.
News of the week:
Anthropic is in discussions to secure $750 million in a funding round led by Menlo Ventures, potentially valuing the AI startup at $15 billion, over three times its spring valuation. The investment, still in the finalization stage, may surpass $18 billion, bolstering Anthropic's standing as a major AI player, rivaling OpenAI, and highlighting VC investors' keen interest in revenue-generating AI startups.
Anthropic Offers Copyright Shield providing indemnification to its enterprise Claude API customers against copyright infringement claims related to their authorized use of services or outputs, pledging to defend against Customer Claims alleging violations of third-party patent, trade secret, trademark, or copyright rights arising from paid service utilization.
ByteDance is secretly using OpenAI’s tech to build a competitor
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, initially is now clandestinely leveraging OpenAI's technology, in violation of OpenAI's terms of service, to construct its own large language model (LLM) named Project Seed. This controversial move, contrary to established AI norms, involves using OpenAI's API at various stages of development, including training and evaluation, as revealed by internal ByteDance documents.
Microsoft's AI chatbot, Copilot, has partnered with Suno, an AI music app, enabling users to compose songs effortlessly using text prompts. By inputting requests like "Create a pop song about adventures with your family," Copilot generates complete songs, including lyrics, instrumentals, and singing voices, with users able to share the AI-generated tracks on social media after enabling the Suno plug-in through Copilot.Microsoft.com
Midjourney V6 has launched the latest alpha release of the image generation AI model developed by David Holz's research collective, introduces significantly improved and more realistic, highly detailed images. Notably, this iteration marks a breakthrough, allowing the model to generate legible text within images, a feature previously absent in Midjourney's repertoire despite advancements in rival AI image generators like OpenAI's DALL-E 3 and Ideogram, with Holz highlighting V6 as the third model trained from scratch over nine months on their AI superclusters
