Sam is back. His interview & letter after the CEO rehired
The highlights you need to know:
Mira Murati (CTO) and Greg Brockman (Director) are back with three researchers who left the same night. Ilya’s (Chief Scientist, ex?) work at OpenAI is under discussion. He’s not making it back to the board.
Microsoft is getting a non-voting observer seat on the board. The cleanest option for Satya without regulator trouble. Enough mentions of the word “diverse” while talking about selecting new board members.
Greg and Sam are partners in running the company. Soon, the org chart will reflect that. The governance structure of the company will also improve.
No single employee or customer has left Open AI.
The Verge conducted a straightforward and candid interview with Sam, characterized by its blend of practicality and emotional depth. During the conversation, Sam acknowledged the leak of Q* and spoke about the swift advancements being made overall. The message is clear: OpenAI's journey is far from over.
News of the week:
Stability AI is releasing a new text-to-image model called SDXL Turbo that can generate images from text descriptions in real-time. SDXL Turbo uses a novel distillation technique to enable single-step high-fidelity image generation, reducing the number of steps required compared to previous models.
The new model ADD (Adversarial Diffusion Distillation) allows to generate images in barely milliseconds! Look at the video
Meta has unveiled a new series of language translation models that preserve the natural style of speech during translation. Additionally, these models offer near real-time speech output, allowing simultaneous translations to occur as you speak.
These are four models:
SeamlessM4T v2 - The foundational model that Meta released in August.
SeamlessExpressive - A model for preserving expression in speech-to-speech translation.
SeamlessStreaming - A streaming translation model for state-of-the-art results with around two seconds of latency.
Seamless - SeamlessExpressive, SeamlessStreaming, and SeamlessM4T v2 into one model.
SeamlessExpressive currently keeps speech rate, pauses for rhythm, emotion, and style in speech-to-speech translation between English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Chinese. SeamlessStreaming translates while the speaker is still talking.
Introducing PPLX Online LLMs Perplexity has launched two new AI models - pplx-7b-online and pplx-70b-online. These publicly available models provide helpful, accurate, and up-to-date responses, addressing key limitations around freshness and hallucinations.

AWS announces Amazon Q - The assistant for work and business. Amazon Q will help employees by answering questions, summarizing reports, writing content, and automating tasks using a company's connected data and documents.
The AI-MO Prize is a new $10 million challenge fund launched by XTX Markets to accelerate the development of AI models that can reason mathematically and solve problems at a level comparable to high-performing humans.
Pika Labs, the AI video startup, has raised $55 million for its series A from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Elad Gill, Andrej Karpathy, and others.

Useful Tools of the Week⚒️
Tldraw has been hitting the Twitter (X) feed recently. And for a real reason. An unsuspecting whiteboard app that came alive with the new AI model. They added GPT4-V into its ‘Make Real’ feature - so you could draw boxes of a web application (let's say a calculator), and it would actually create a functional calculator.
This allows us to create a real or generative image straight from our sketches. Imagine this App was available to famous painters 💭
