AI Achieved Gold Medals Again
OpenAI and Google just hit another milestone in competitive programming. At the 2025 ICPC World Finals, OpenAI’s GPT-5 + reasoning model solved all 12/12 problems, outperforming all 139 university teams (top human: 11/12). Google’s Gemini 2.5 Deep Think also earned gold with 10/12, even cracking a problem no human had solved.
With back-to-back medals at the IMO, IOI, and now ICPC, it’s clear: AI has surpassed humans in competitive programming, and the gap is only widening.
Thinking Time of GPT-5 Thinking
OpenAI rolled out a new thinking time toggle in ChatGPT for GPT-5 Thinking, letting you pick response depth vs speed. Plus and Business tiers get Standard as the new default and can switch to Extended; Pro also gets Light for the snappiest replies and Heavy for deeper reasoning. Your choice persists until changed, all queries start at Standard, and it is live on the web now, with iOS and Android coming soon. The goal is faster answers when you want them and more thorough ones when it matters.
News of the week 🌍
GPT-5 Codex
OpenAI introduced GPT-5-Codex, a GPT-5 variant focused solely on coding: it isn’t dramatically “smarter,” but it writes cleaner code with fewer irrelevant comments, responds much faster on simple requests, and can grind much longer on complex builds and refactors. Early reviews (including Every) highlight smoother dev ergonomics and steadier long-horizon execution, making it a better day-to-day pair-programmer even without a raw IQ jump.
Google Launches Agent Payments Protocol
Google unveiled the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open framework that lets AI agents securely make purchases with user approval. Backed by over 60 companies, including American Express, Mastercard, PayPal, Coinbase, Salesforce, and Intuit, AP2 uses digital “mandates” to verify intent and payment, supports cards, bank transfers, and stablecoins, and is published openly on GitHub. This marks a major step toward AI agents acting as autonomous shoppers with trusted, secure payment rails.
Meta’s new smart glasses
Meta unveiled three smart glasses lines at Meta Connect: Ray-Ban Display glasses that pair with a Neural Band to read subtle electrical muscle signals for near-invisible control of messaging and navigation, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 with 8-hour battery life, 3K Ultra HD video, and conversation focus, and the athlete-oriented Oakley Meta Vanguard offering 9-hour battery life, water resistance, and Garmin connectivity for real-time metrics. The Neural Band personalizes to each user’s patterns, tackling the two biggest wearables hurdles: making glasses people actually want to wear and enabling silent, reliable input that feels closer to intention than touch.
But not everything was good at the presentation. Glasses failed during the demo. Andrew Bosworth says Meta’s smart glasses crashed after a Live AI command DDoS’d its own servers, while a rare bug stopped Mark Zuckerberg from answering a WhatsApp call.
Where Do We Use AI
New usage data from OpenAI and Anthropic shows diverging patterns: Claude skews to coding and technical workflows, while ChatGPT leans into writing and decision support with users seeking advice over pure content creation; ChatGPT’s personal use climbed from 53% (Jun 2024) to 73% (2025), and adoption in low- and middle-income countries is growing 4× faster for ChatGPT, whereas Claude remains concentrated in wealthier regions; across both platforms, users are delegating more and shifting toward information seeking/search rather than direct output, signaling a split where ChatGPT increasingly serves as a personal assistant while Claude anchors professional, code-heavy work.
AI Companion By Zoom
Zoom launched AI Companion 3.0 with proactive agentic skills (smart scheduling, “free up my time,” “prepare me”), universal note-taking across Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, and agentic retrieval over Microsoft/Google data. A Custom AI Companion add-on brings a no-code custom agent builder (MCP, ServiceNow A2A) and new SharePoint/ServiceNow connectors. Zoom adds lifelike AI avatars, real-time voice translation, 60fps video, Zoom for Cisco Rooms with Cisco, and a new Zoom Video Management hub for creation, storage, and analytics, rolling out from late 2025 into 2026.
Nvidia’s Chips Banned in China
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he’s “disappointed” after the FT reported China’s cyberspace regulator told tech firms to pause purchases of Nvidia’s China-market AI chips, as U.S.–China rules keep shifting. He urged broad access “including China,” noting July’s policy reversal letting sales resume under a deal where Nvidia pays 15% of China revenue to the U.S. government. Nvidia shares dipped; Chinese buyers reportedly included DeepSeek, Tencent, and Alibaba. Separately, Nvidia will supply chips to the Stargate UK data center with OpenAI, Arm, and NScale.
